Creative Crown Molding of Dallas

Q: What is it made of?

It is made from extruded polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam.

The first thing you think of is white ice chest cooler foam. That's expanded foam. Some moldings made from that are white.

Our molding is made of high density, extruded polystyrene. It i stronger, light weight, light blue.

The cells are very small and paints much better. White cooler foam is much rougher and breaks apart.

No plasters, mud, or concrete finishes are needed. It is ready to prime and paint. Do not use outside unless it is used in a sheltered area or a hard coating is applied.

Notice the texture of white vs blue foam

Creative Crown's blue foam is smoother than White foam

Q: Is it soft ?

It's best to mount foam moldings in high places (ie. ceiling level, where there is no contact with chairs, vacuums and hands..

Foam can be scratched or dented. Touch up is very easily. Use LATEX spackle or painter's caulk.

Put on damaged spot and wipe off with a business or credit card. After it drys, sand with very fine sandpaper (320 grit) and touch up the paint.

Paint Recommendation: Only use water based primer and paints. (latex, acrylic paint and glazes are OK). NEVER use oil based paint, aerosol paint, lacquer paint without testing them on a scrap piece of foam for 24 hours.

Prime with a bristle or foam or low volume sprayer.

After careful testing we have found that ICI paints save time and dry with a smooth finish. Available at ICI paint stores and HomeDepot stores.

Only 1 coat of Gripper® and 1 coat of topcoat is needed with these paints. Choose either Glidden® Ultra-Hide® Latex or Dulux® Advanced Alkyd.

ask for:

Gripper® Primer/Sealer (3210)

and

Glidden® Ultra-Hide® Latex paint (1416)

OR

Dulux® Advanced Oil paint (a hybrid of oil and water)

(1508 gloss or 1506 semi-gloss)

Q: How do I cut it? Can I use a saw?

Our molding cuts great with a simple serrated kitchen knife or a power miter saw.

A large "snap-blade" knife is excellent to make smooth strait cuts if a saw isn't available..

The installation video CD is sent out with every new order has a video clip of how to put up the molding

Q: How do I attach it to the wall? What kind of glue?

All of these adhesives work great!

Q: How do I make the joints look good?

One of the best advantages is our foam crown molding does not expand or contract like wood molding when the temperature and humidity changes.

Humidity does not effect our molding. It is not a food source for mold.

Our moldings are a solid piece with no extra seams or finger joints

First apply a bead of painters caulk down the side of the joint. Alex painters caulk by DAP works good.

Second take a flat object like a credit card and hold with both hands and gently scrape the excess off the joint.

Pull down following the contours of the molding.

Smooth any uneven spots with a glass of water and a wet finger.

Q: How do I glue corners and joints together?

When you purchase INSIDE or OUTSIDE corners from us you will receive 2 pieces of molding approximately 12 inches long. Each will have a mitered angle on one side. The corner will be 90 degrees unless a custom angle is requested. Double sided tape will be on only one side of the corners. Remove the paper from the tape and attach the other side of the corner to piece with the tape. It is better to do this on a table. Place the molding upside down (part that will touch the ceiling). Slide the 2 pieces closer together. Alignment is very important to have the best joint.

Another way to put up corners and the correct way when you miter the ends of the big pieces yourself is to glue the left and right sides up separately. Adjust the alignment while the Liquid Nails is still soft. Once hardened do not try to move the molding. Remove and replace is the only way to adjust at this point.

Q: Where do I use corner blocks or molding corners?

Corner blocks work great for several applications:

Medium blocks fits 3-1/2" - 4-1/2" moldings

Large blocks fit 4 1/2" and 6" moldings

Inside Corner Blocks and Outside Corner Blocks

Small or large single blocks are great to set off the focal point of the corner in any room. It works great to just butt you molding up to.

Medium or large double blocks are great on flat walls and 90° corners to set off the focal point off over any door or window.

Medium and large double blocks can be used to make a transition or to

add a focal point to the peak of a cathedral ceiling.

Here is a example of a inside corner block making a transition on a vaulted or cathedral ceiling.
